Brisbane Airport Corporation Mobile Display
A Mobile Education and Display Unit for the second airport runway.
Client: Brisbane Airport Corporation
Category: Mobile Display
Date: November 2018
The Brisbane airport runway update is a huge project for South East Queensland, where a new site totaling 3.6 hectares is under construction. It is officially the biggest aviation project in Australia to date which Brisbane began planning for back in the 1970’s. Brisbane is now at the pointy end of this 8 year long construction, with the major completion set for 2020. Brisbane Airport Corporation engaged Brandi Projects to help fit out a Mobile Education and Display Unit (MDEU) aka “Benny.” This unit assists in educating the public about the fascinating details of this runway project. To give you an idea of the size of its size and scale, construction involves a 3.3 km runway; 12km of taxiway; and 3 deep levels of construction under each. In addition to a four lane underpass totalling 1.1km of separated roadway (Dryandra Road).
“This new runway is a key piece of infrastructure that will enable the continued growth of Brisbane, our region and the nation. Furthermore the new runway will enable Brisbane Airport to better meet the demands of the community it serves, now and for future generations,” Brisbane Airport corporation says.
Scope of works
The scope of works involved in producing the MEDU included the design, production, fitout and delivery of a custom trailer, purpose-built to educate the public on the runway updates.
We project-managed the successful fitout of this trailer on time and on budget. This involved utilising the skill and expertise of Varley Specialised Vehicle Manufacturers as well as collaborating with Prodigy + for branding strategy and content.
The MEDU’s features at a glance
- Multiple internal touchscreen monitors
- External outdoor screen and speakers
- Multiple ipads
- Multiple audio handsets
- Manual triangular spinning interactives depicting changes to Brisbane’s airport over multiple decades
- Internal floor graphics
- Runway core sample displaying in an acrylic tube
- Wall mounted brochure holders
- Retractable awning and external patio
- Retractable access stairs
About this project
We fitted out the MEDU with extensive features for use by Brisbane Airport Corporation’s mobile education team. The entrance has an AS 1428.1 compliant wheelchair lifter which tucks away under the access door and is pulled out as required.
A bordered outdoor patio area with awnings maximises branding impact, and creates a dedicated space for the team to conduct community engagement. A side door to the trailer allows staff to access inside the trailer easily, and they can also access storage and refrigeration while on the road. The unit provides a winch to easily bring the front floor panel up to a vertical position.
Varying levels of componentry encourage education throughout the unit. These include multiple technology points, encompassing touchscreen monitors, ipads and audio handsets. Spinning interactives encourage education, as do tactile sample tubes and striking internal floor graphics depicting the runway.
